454cid LS1 ... Anyone got it?

454cid LS1 ... Anyone got it?
I read a Vette Magazine about Agostino's 454cid LS1. The specs are 4.125" bore, 4.25" stroke, and a 6.200" rod. It took some clearancing, but it worked. I asked about doing this once and some of you said it was too unusual. I would be interested in this kind of motor if I can get more out of it. What to you guys think?

You apparently didn't read my post or think they are using the stock block. Not possible. It's ARE re-sleeved block. They have it running in a C5. I left the magazine at work so I will have to give a web reference tomorrow night

I am pretty sure that there was a guy a little while back that put a 454 LS1 in a Impala. I think if you do a search you could probably find the thread it was not long ago.

I've heard of them before . . . one drawback (besides expense) is the small-block sized heads can't keep up with the big-block like displacement. You will have a ton of torque but not as much HP as you should. Some kind of forced induction setup with solve that problem, though.

I have the magazine here with me. It's Vette. The article is not online. Here are some more specs. 10.9:1 CR, LS6 Heads ported/polished with 2.10" In/1.60" Ex valves, Lunati Hyd. Roller 244/252-114 .600" cam, Dual Lunati valve springs, Jesel J2K Rocker Arms, Ross pistons, Lunati Billet rod and crank, Childs & Alberts Dura-moly rings, and a .915" compression height. Here is the weird part. They only show a 463 RWHP and 474 lbs of torque in their C5 Vette. Something is wrong here. That much cubes and a big cam should put out more.

I compared the cam specs to one of CraneCams for a true 454. They have one real close and said that it's power band is from 3800 to 7000. On this LS1 motor the HP was level at 5500 rpm and peak torque was at 4500. Something else is restricting it. Intake, headers, exhaust, tuning, something.

I have the Magazine too and am going to call Wade or Barry at ARE in a few minutes to discuss some motor options. The cam used in the 454 was requested by the owner and is a mild hydraulic cam. The magazine indicates that the owner later wants to upgrade to a solid roller. I think ARE argueably knows more about LSx engine building than anybody else..

I have a block for sell that comes honed, new hardened Dura-Bond cam bearings, and new ARP main studs. Some people think the dry sleeves are better than the wet sleeves. I called Darton who makes the dry sleeves for Agostino racing and the wet sleeves. The tec said the wet sleeves are far better and can take more abuse, and that the dry sleeves are milled very thin to get a 4.125" bore. He said Darton has been using wet sleeves for years in motors that make over 1000 hp with out any problems. Also with the wet sleeves you get better heat transfer. Morgan Machine Shop are setting the motor up for me. Naturally aspirated cars with 427 CI are running the ¼ mile the low to mid 10's, with NOS there hitting the mid to hi 9's. I would be willing to go 3000 shipped. I would be willing to go 3000 shipped. You can email me at NRKnause@midamerican.com
