I got a lq4 block from one of my friends and I am trying to get a ideal of what it is going to cost to make a 408. I would like to put a procharger on the motor when done. I also have the cam and heads picked out just trying to find out if it is better/cheaper to buy a short block or build this lq4 I have.Would just need to know cost of parts have someone who will put the motor together.

So any help on price of parts and cost to have motor bored would be great thanks.

here's what it cost me.

 

Machine work and assembly will run about $1500 from a good machine shop. best to pick one that specializes in LSx builds. Pistons $600-$1000 depending on what you go with or if you need custom pistons. Rods are also $500-$1200 also depends on what you go with your budget and power goals. cranks run 900 to 2400. add in your bearing and anything else main studs or whatever you can have the Short block built for $2000-3K parts and another $1500 machining

 

It's cheaper to get a built 408 short block from one of the sponsers for less than $4000.

 

Go look at texas speeds site(sponser---->).Very good prices right now. Look at the 402-408 ironblocks, starts at < $3500.

 

WOW.... I paid $779.00 for my eagle crank, $349 for my eagle h-beams, $535 for my wiseco nitrous pistons, $100 for mahle standard tension rings, $189 for main studs, $ 160 for clevite "H" series main/rod bearings, $ 200 for balancing, $125 for boring/torque plate honing, and $400 for assembly.

My machine shop builds alot of cts-v caddy stuff for scca type racing, and a **** ton of full out big block 550+ ci. drag motors, they know their stuff.

My 408 short block with good nitrous ready parts cost me $28xx.00 out the door ready to put in the car. If someone would like a list of part #'s and where to find them...shoot me a pm.

one thing left out is purchasing the block-if you can get the block on a deal, might work out better buying the parts and having one built locally, but if you have to lay out $1000+ for the motor to start with, and only plan on using the block, might be cheaper to purchase one done, but figure in the shipping, and if theres a problem with the engine, who is gonna pay then, when the builder is 1000+ miles away
w/o a stroker kit, trying to remember my costs
comp. engine, $1000, and i used the heads and crank
rods were $300
wiseco pistons were $500-600
machine work, including rings, bearings, polishing the crank, and valve job and setting up the springs was around $1500
so i have around 3500, but this included some head work, but 317 heads are cheap and plentiful, and i still dont have a stroker, but i an running a disc procharger, with a carb, and a corvette acces drive setup
i guess if i was starting over, i prob would look at a built stroker short block, again, the purchase of the iron block cost locally would prob. be the determining factor
i do my own assemb., but if i payed someone, i would have prob. been in the $4000 range when done, but i know what i have

Brand new 6.0 iron blocks are only $5-600. either from TSP or scoggin dickey I can't remember
