Default Timing chain dampener?

I putting a cam in my car along with an LS2 heavy duty timing chain & the LS2 dampener will not fit the LS1 block. The LS1/LS6 dampener is no longer avalible through GM as well. Any thoughts on where I could get one of if I even need to since the LS1's don't come with them to begin with?

The early (beige) damper has a 2.187" bolt center spacing. SDPC had it in stock last year, but it is now discontinued.

The late (black) damper has a 1.762" bolt center spacing.

Right, so if I don't want to drill & tap my block to get it put in, is it a big deal to run without one? This is just a street car that doesn't get any abuse, I just want to take all the precautions that I can.

So if I do actually find one, is it worth spending $100 - $120 on?

I would try several vendors. I got mine from Thunder. The damper prevents the chain from wrapping on the crank sprocket at higher RPM. A lot of guys don't run them, but it does aid in timing chain life. I think its a good thing to have, but that's only my opinion. I felt the cost of a broken timing chain was high so for me the $100 was worth it.

Did you measure the bolt center spacing? If your block has the wider bolt centers, the late damper bolt centers will be off the edge of the raised bosses of the block.

Wow, I just bought the LS6 damper for my setup last year at this time. I guess I got lucky in that they were still available then.

Tho, I did pay just over $100 for the damn thing. But I'm glad I did. Since I had an LS6 block, it bolted right in.

As stated above, doesn't appear to be made any more. I am surprised that the aftermarket hasn't picked up on this and made one.

Thunder Racing would be the best bet.

I had the damper in my LS2 with a double roller timing chain, But when i went to change my cam ,the timing gear would drop down on the damper and would not let me remove the chain, And tried to remove the damper and the oil pump was in the way, so i had to remove the pump ,Witch is a pain in the ***. I took the damper off and left it off. Now i don't know if the problem would be with a single chain. The damper will fit with a single or double chain.
