my 98 is running stong at 115K... doesnt leak or burn any thing.. the transmission died at last week thought but hell it lasted 12years..... I bought the car new in july of 97 and have never had any major problem's with the engine or any of the sensor's on it...

Not to help revive this dead horse but nobody in this thread stated that the rear oil passage is different. The 99+ blocks have the two ports behind the rear cover connected while the 98 blocks are not. Can easily be changed with machining but ive been told that extreme rpms(talking close to 8k) or extended high rpms are not as good unless this passage is machined.

I love how everyone says 98's are slowest, so whats that make the 02's Ive beat up on that had more mods than me? but seriously the only reason id really prefer a newer one is just that, its newer, but I'm not as modded as a lot of you so I prob wouldnt see as many issues

Hopefully someone doesn't search your recent posts if you ever sell your car! lol The "How to build a Ls1" book covers all of the differences between the years. Most have stated the biggest issues, if not all.
(Some one asked earlier)
FYI, my A4 went out @ 120k. I have 3-4 friends with trucks and Camaros that all had to rebuild or swap transmissions. I've had lot's of maintenace with my '98, but never a motor problem. My 10 bolt is still legit.

I love my 98. 72,000 miles and still going. Did some bolt ons as you can see in my sig. The 98's had the biggest injectors of all the years. I run mine around 6700 RPM regularly and knock on wood, all is still kosher.
In response to those getting their LS1 heads worked on....what would some port work go for on a stock LS1 head?
