Shim the oil pump relief spring or not?
I am assembling an oil pump. I have searched high and low for this answer. Should I shim the relief spring for more oil pressure or not? I know some companies like ARE, MTI shim theirs, while Katech doesn't. One person posted he shimmed his .150", which to me seemed excessive. I would like to have "alittle" more oil pressure than stock. Has anyone here shimmed their spring? if so how much? and what was the end result for pressure? Does anyone have a pump from ARE or MTI and know what shim they use? Thanks, Darrin

I've used 3 small washers for a total of .110" sometimes they come out to .100" depending on the thickness of the washers. You can buy a bag of small washers at Radio Shack for $1.50 or so. Seems to add around 15-20psi, but those were on stroker engine packages which ran about 50-60psi warm at idle. Bearing oil clearance comes into play on any engine, if you have a "loose" engine you may not gain much pressure as a fresh engine.

I think it would be a PITA with it mounted, it takes a little work to remove it if your that far though. You can wrench the pickup tube bolt loose for 20 minutes, or loosen the pan to get to it easier.
