Intake blew up -- what gives?
The Facts:
1. Nitrous was NOT armed.
2. Nitrous bottle was CLOSED.
3. I was in 5th gear at about 2800 RPM
4. When I increased my speed to pass another vehicle, the engine backfired VERY loud.
5. WOT was never reached.
6. The intake is now blown apart on every runner.
7. The upper and lower lid are also destroyed.
8. I have been told this could be caused by a lean condition.
9. Any other internal damages have yet to be discovered.
I'm interested in seeing what other people might think caused this....

must have been a pool of it in there and for some reason it hiccup'd and backfired out the intake. Or a solenoid leak. that's REALLY strange. Big reason why when i bought my Vette after i sold my '96 Z28 was because i was scared of a backfire like that. I had all the saftey stuff to, RPM window, WOT switch, FPS Switch, blow down tube and Mallory ignition box, but i still worried about that. i've heard that if it pools THAT can happen.

They will compress the hyd lifter, and while it might lift the ex valve a little, just not nearly enough to get the cyl pressure down enough that it wont blow back into the intake.

Question whats a lean pop? Also if the exhaust valve hung up and forced the exhaust into the intake wouldn't it just flow into the intake and then get sucked into the other runners? or are we talking about a hardcore exhaust gas backfire in the intake?

What about a fuel solenoid leaking? I saw something like this on an ls1 car one time with a wet kit but the car burned to the ground. They finaly said some thing to the effect that the fuel was puddleing in the intake and caused it to happen. This happend when the car was leaving the line. I wouldn't think this would happen though if you were in 5th gear at 50 mph or so. I have definetly heard of problem with fuel puddling in ls1/ls6 intakes though.
