It's possible for it to be a tensioner or idler pully so start the car with out the belt on that will soulve that. If it is the engine I would check the roller bearings in the rockers, and to check the lifters use a pushrod and push down on each one and if they push down real easy than there bad. Also don't rule out a cam bearing beacuse you have a sqeak and knock so check everything carefully.

my ss is making that same noise just without the squiking. I put that sea form oil treatment in the oil tank and let it sit for about thalf an hour and it quieted the knocking alot im doing a oil change tomorow checking to see if there's any metal on the drain plug that will tell me is the connecting rod is the problem.

as long as the flywheel and harmonic balancer are in place and you dont plan to bounce it off the limiter there is absolutely nothing wrong with running it without the transmission

the only real difference is that the pressure plate isn't bolted to the flywheel which isn't even a big deal its not like it balances the engine

all that noise is coming from the top of the engine it sounds like to me, all i hear from underneath the car is the open headers. the knocking sound almost sounds like a rocker hitting the valve cover, or a broken valve spring. if it was a rod knocking or a spun bearing you could hear it from underneath the car. just my .02

i have the rockers off all of the pushrods are straight and the lifters feel firm i guess the next step is to pull the heads, which i dont want to because then ill want to go with an aftermarket set heads and im wanting to save my money for a rear end.

From what I've read on this forum, basically all LSX replacement are LS7.

In other words they replace the original LS1 lifters.

might sound crazy, but i had an exhaust leak that sounded just like that! i thought it was valvetrain noise, then it got louder and i thought it might be a rod bearing. sounded metal to metal, and squeeked just like that. wierdest exhaust leak sound ive ever head. it turned out to be my header bolts were loose and the gasket bang and squeld back and forth like a blad of grass does between your thumbs. check that out too.....

Well maybe you can get a nice rebuilt or new short block.

How many miles are on your car, I mean many LS1s are known
to go for way over 100K+.

Unless someone was putting the hammer down.
