Engine noise video please help
In my experience, if it's a spun rod or main bearing, you would DEFINITELY be able to hear it from the pan. Think about it. The bearings are gripping journals that are mere inches from the pan bottom - the sound would resonate inside the pan, and you'd be able to hear it, for sure. The fact that you can hear it louder from the topside, tells me it's something else.
HOWEVER, I would definitely pull it out and inspect your pan bottom and windage tray for debris and shavings. It could be something simple - it may not be, but you won't know until you remove it. You've already done the most tedious part, which is removing the transmission - pulling it now is a no-brainer.
You're already in this deep, might as well find the source.
