Default stock heads question

i am trying to find some stock heads for my 2002 camaro. I want to get some stockers to port and maybe polish. I found some that are casting 853 for a good price. What is the difference between these and my stock 241 heads. Will they be a direct swap on mine. do they have the same valve cover pattern and bolt pattern? any help appreciated. thanks

Both heads will bolt right up. There's not much of a difference. Some say the 241 flow better.

I believe 853 are the early LS1 castings. The 241 are late LS1 castings and are most likely what your 2002 car came with.

I applaud your interest in porting them yourself but most people just go for an R&D'd CNC, on already assembled heads.

yeah 853's are the early ls1 heads and the 241's started showing up in mid 2000 models up to 2002

thanks for the replies. Is there enough of a difference that i should pass up the 853 castings and try to find some 241 heads? I plan on porting them anyway so they will do a lot better then my stock 241 heads right?

The only difference is in the casting process which leaves the runners smoother on the 241s. As far as porting goes, they're the same heads.

if you want to pick up some compression you could get some stock 5.3 heads and port them, you can pick up some used stock 5.3 heads pretty cheap. then you can have your stock valves ground in with a valve job because the stok 5.3 valves are smaller. when your done porting you should have a valve job done anyway.
