Default Front cover alignment tool neccesary?

I was going to try and pull my front cover to check the timing chain/set to see if it is correct. I was also wondering if the front cover alignment tool is actually neccesary. To me it looks like its not neccesary unless you are having a hard time getting the cover on. By the looks of it, the bolts will always go in the same holes, same places, so whats the deal with aligning something that should align itself?

also i was gonna install a double roller, heard you have to pull the engine, but if you get spacers with the kit, dont see why you couldnt just throw the spacer on at the same time.

Thanks

it helps for a used front seal to not leak, after removing the cover. If it was installed new with same tool.

front cover has never been removed, i heard as long as the pan isnt pulled, you dont need to re-align.

most don't use the tool. If I do in-car stuff I leave the cover loose until the dampner is on. The seal centers itself on the dampner then I tighten the cover.
I do have the tools though. With the engine out most just make the front and rear cover level with the block.
With a double and using the spacers it make getting the tube lined back up without pinching the O-ring a pain. Some people enlarge the pickup tube mount hole to make it a little easier

I didn't use it when I put my motor back together and I'm not having any problems.

anyone install a double roller in the car? because if ima change the chain, i might as well replace the set with one that will last.

I just finished my h/c swap and I used an LS2 Chain. When you compare it to your LS1 chain, you will see a big difference. Plus, its only about $40. Some may differ, but I don't think it is worth the extra hassle or expense for the double roller. If you are going to swap a cam, do at least upgrade to an LS2 chain. It is too easy once everything is already apart.

I'm not really sure on that. I do know that we have a guy in our group that has an ms4 cam with his stock ls1 chain. He sprays it also and it has held up so far. I think the key is if you are in there anyway, its not a bad idea to upgrade the chain to something better for piece of mind.

I think you're supposed to put a little dab of RTV at the cover pan junction on both sides(pass. and driver). I never have and so far no leaks.
