the least restrictive MAF is no MAF.. why not tune it for speed/density?

Why do you say that? Did you look at the price? Compare this to a typical stock Delphi 85mm....

Is there a downside to running a MAF that's too big? Will it read poorly at low RPM?

Sorry if the question is off topic from the OP, just curious.

does anyone have any experience using this maf?
does any tuning need to be done in order to use it?

i think that is a pretty good price considering they probabably dont mass produce them by the tens of thousands.

what was the original application for such a big maf (100mm-105mm), why do it need to get the 6 pin adapter to make it work on my ls1?

From the factory they don't. In the '06 - '08 Corvette's they locate the MAF sensor in the air bridge, eliminating the need for a separate MAF housing. Halltech designed a custom housing, the one that Bruce sells here, to accomodate the Hitachi sensor. A new MAF table is required in the tune, but Bruce provides tables to start with. You will need someone to flash the PCM with the new MAF table.

If you do some searches, you will find that people are seeing impressive gains when using a large MAF meter.

The 6.0 85mm is the same as 01-04 Z06 which is the same as most 01-05 LS MAFs which is all different than the 06-08 and different than the 100mm PowrMAF. The new sensor is made for GM by Hitachi and is light years from the open wire early style. While your PCM may not be able to use the full range, it is ~4x the previous and far less restrictive.
