Use thicker head gaskets.

That is the band fix. If you want to increase the compression ratio without changing the pistons, switch to a set of 5.3L heads. Their combustion chambers are 58cc and you can have them milled down all the way to 53cc. If you want to lower the compression level later on, put th eoriginal heads back on.

^^^ I agree with the above statement. Those heads can be had pretty cheap and you can mill them down. Also look for a cam 232-238/236-242 with a low .6xx lift and 112lsa

That should up your compression and give you some good power.

Sell the heads and buy another set. Chances are when you get closer to doing the turbo setup you will want a better set of heads.

Should the engine go out when changing heads?

The heads can be changed with the engine still in the car.

Head studs make it a little harder, but still very doable.

you may have to pull a couple of the studs out, that makes it alittle easier.a 59 cc chamber would really help but if you don't want to pull the heads you will have to make a compromise.
what does your complete exhaust setup consist of,long tubes and a good ory ?
maybe go with a cam like a 232/236 on comp xer lobes or xfi of similar duration on a 110 +2 or so to try to keep the dcr as high as possible to keep from killing your torque. hit up predator-z or patrickg on here and they should steer you in the right direction.

If you do the work yourself with a budget head and a good cam, 2k is very possible even with paying someone to tune.

Just looked in sales section and looks like heads will cost me well over $1000, plus shipping, taxes and so on... Not worth it.
So that leaves me with just cam and maybe better intake, I guess...

slow trap, exhaust is:
Pacesetter LTs
Pacesetter ORY
Flowmaster 3" catback

I'll do the work myself, cause no one tunes american V8s here. I'm the first
And I'll deffo tune it myself - being an IT person, I like it

You can get a set of 5.3L used assembled heads for a $200 shipped. I think you are looking at a set of ported heads. No need for them as the stock ones will be a good temp set until you can put the original heads back on with the turbo.

I say wait for the turbo. Get the nitrous setup PROPERLY, and when you are itching for some excitement, spray it. I think that will be your best solution until you can afford the turbo, since you said it already has nitrous just not set up. Minimal cost, maximum fun.

But, you knew this already......
+1...
You could just throw some spray on it for now..
