Default Removing coolant from block? Head swap

Every time I do a head swap, one of the things that takes up alot of my time is removing all the coolant from the head bolt holes in the block. I have been rolling up toilet tissue and sticking down in the holes to "wick" the coolant out. How's everybody else doing this? Please tell me some quick and easy way to remove all that coolant.

The first thing I did was siphon out the majority of liquid with one of those things you use to suck snot out of little kids noses (sorry bout that description but I don't know what it is called). That saved me like a roll of paper towels. Then I used the rolled up paper towels - worked really well. A friend of mine suggested that if you had the time - use the rolled up towels but leave them in like overnight - it will really absorb quite a bit (it probably wouldn't take all night - but a good hour or two maybe?).
Oh - and have fun as usuall!

I use a fluid evacuator: http://www.mityvac.com/kits.html#fluidevacuator

Also one of those air nozzles with the long extension helps.

Hey Gomer,

There is a brass freeze plug on either side of the block. Not sure easy is a description that I'd use when pulling them.

Good luck.

If you drain the block only about 1/4 cup of coolant comes out when you take the heads off. One drain plug is on the pass. side directly above the starter and the other is on the driver side of the block behind the alternator. The driver side plug requires a huge 17mm allen wrench to remove and the other is 5/16" allen.
Don't remove the plug above the oil filter which looks like the others or oil will come out.

I use a straw and a shop vacuum. Just stick the straw in the hole and make a fist around the straw with the vacuum stuck to the top on my hand. Works great!

Remove the brass freeze plugs. It will greatly reduce clean up time and little to no coolant will get into the head bolt holes.

Yep, remove the two brass freeze plugs. One is located on driver's side above the alternator and the other one is on the pass. side above the starter.
