Anyone Destroked to a 302?

I read an article on the building of a nostalgia based 302c.i. for a 4th Gen Fbody. Problem is I cannot remember where. Obviously our cars have their place in history and my favorite is the 1st Gen Z-28 with the 302ci. Has anyone built a LS1 version of this engine? if so, where can get info on it and parts list. Thanks.

I dont know of anyone that has done this. but its a really cool idea. talking about a motor that would rev. I had a 302 in a 68 Z/28 and man i shifted at 7000 and never hurt that motor. that baby would rev. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Instead of spending money to decrease stroke why not increase stroke?If everything is forged you can still rev it to the sky and make more power.I dont see a point in pulling a motor and adding a smaller crank or pistons and rods when you can go bigger.

If I remember correctly, the car made 360-370rwhp or so. Decent power in general, but that's slow for an LS1. Solid roller (even some hydraulic roller) stock displacement cars are making ~450rwhp or close to it.

I looked into doing this for quite some time, however after extensive research, Decided to plan another route. The 302 would come into limitations not on the bottom end, but on the valve train. Even the BIG stroker spins to 8k when set up properly. The 302 I was planning had a monter cam, but yet wouldn't make any more torque than a stock motor with all the bolt ons, and would n't peak until 5700-6000, the upper RPM horsepoer would have been nice, but it owuldn't have started seeing gains until 6000+... all the way to 11,000 if it could have been built that way <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> With aggressive lobes, 1.8:1 rockers, that much RPM is a problem. I am inclined to agree with the people who say just go bigger, trust me, a 422 revs plenty quick <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
Car had 4.56's in a stock 10bolt. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
Went for a ride in it when getting some gas. Very fun, watching the RPMs. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />

As some one already noted the heads on these LSx engines are outstanding and the intakes aren't even a quarter as bad as people think either. If you destroke it you will only have to rev it more to make the same power (or less) and in the LS1's case you may run out of rpm since the heads are so damn good. This will leave you with less tq everywhere and also less hp especially down lower. Basically you'll spend a lot of money to go slower but at a higher rpm?

As far as the 302 engines from the 1st gen Camaros, there were two variations. The 67 used a small journal 327 block and a 283 (small journal crank). The 68-69 used a large journal 327 block with a new crank desigened specifically for the new 302. The bore and stroke on both engines was 4.0 x 3.0.

Car was built to be a showcar that was also very driveable, not a max drag effort. I think it still has AC on it folks.

Hey guys, Thanks for all the well thought input. Not rying to start a word war, just curious. I had the opportunity to drive a 69' Z with factory 302 (although some work done in the years since) and G.D. that was the only car I have ever seen run thru 9K rpms. If you've never run those rpms in a car then you just wont understand, you keep pressing the pedal and the damn thing just keeps revving higher and higher. Anyway, 15 years later I was biten by the Z28 bug again and curious if anyones done this as a tribute or just all out fun. BTW, I have a motorcycle also, just not as fun. Thanks.

There is no reason to destroke the 5.7L. The rpm limit is the because of valvetrain not the bottom end. Stock short block is good for 7k rpms with good rod bolts. Thats right around where the limit is for hydraulic rollers.

I read about this and liked the idea. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" /> Couldn't you reproduce this motor with a stock LS1 block and a offset ground 4.8 crank?Or another possibility would be a 5.3 block bored .060 and 4.8 crank.
