Default 228 cam

talking with people who installed a 224 cam they have said they gained power at every rpm over the stock cam. Will this hold true for a tsp 228 cam?
How big can i go before i start losing power down low?
the cam i choose will be on 112 lsa and i dont plan on shifting past 6400.(A4)

anybody ever jump from 224 to 228? was there a big difference?

I think the 228 is a great cam. As far as going from a 224 to a 228 I dont think the power gain would be enough to make the swap worthy. I was going to go with TSPs 228R before I decided to go custom grind and have talked to many with that cam and they all say it is an awesome street cam.

The 228 is a very good cam. I've ran it before and is still my favorite cam. I have a Torquer 2 now.

how was the jump to that Torquer 2? did you lose a lot of low-mid range power?
i was thinking about that cam too, but i dont want to lose low end and take the rpms up to high.

I have a 228 cam. With the 4.10 gears i have , its a great street cam. Great midrange and pulls like a 2 stroke up top.

i really dont remember what the stock cam felt like. I havnt had the stock cam for 6 years. From idle to 2000 rpms its a little soft, after that it really wakes up

I had the 228 in my m6 car. Pulled very hard after 3000. I ran my friends ss ms3 car a few times. He would jump out ahead about a car and I would start to reel him in every time. The torqer 2 keeps a lot of mid range to high range and the 228 seems to be all around. I hope that helps. Good luck.

yea i wanted to go 224 at first than 228 than the torquer 2. Now im thinking about the middle of the three which is the 228. I like the fact that others with the 224 cam have gained at every rpm over the stock cam. I hate to lose power anywhere in the powerband by going to big of a cam.
I have to go up hills when i go home and dont want to struggle going up the hill.
I swear i lose a gallon of gas every time i have to hit the hills to go home. haha

it is not the best cam if you have a stock stall. It has 4* overlap and will pull on your brakes due to the raised idle. If you get a stall you'll burn more gas uphill.
If you do not plan a stall, look at at least -6* overlap to have close to stock idle.
Something like 218/226 .605/.581 115+3 LSA

I will be getting a stall, but what i really want to find out is if the 228 will gain power at every rpm over the stock cam, from idle to red line. I have heard the 224 makes great power everywhere, so with a slightly bigger cam (228) will it make power everywhere, but just pull harder? Or will i need to sacrifice some low end going with 228 over the 224?

TSP site says the 224's power band is from 1400-6300 and the 228 is 1600-6300

So if thats accurate by going with a 228 i will just lose 200 rpm of low end??

i would not say those numbers are very accurate were the power comes in. i have a torquer 2 and the power doesn't really kick in untill about 3k at the least, on tsp's website it says the power range is from 1800-6500 its more like 2500-6700. if you want good all around power stick with a 224 or 228 dont go any bigger or you will sacrafice driveablilty and power down low.

This weekend installed a TSP 228/228 on 112 LSA and their 5.3L heads. ar is a M6. Cam comes in at 3400 RPM. Pulls to 6700 or so... Don't know how TSP comes up with their RPM range?!?!?! Listing at 1600 is comical. False advertising. You don't lose a bunch below 3400 but you do notice. I'm happy. Once it comes on it kicks like a mule and pulls strong. I think V2 would have been a big mistake. A 224 would be OK but the 228 seems just right, however, you do have to keep the RPMs up to realize the power.

That's interesting information. What is your ICL installed at? I have a 228/228 cam on a 114 that I am planning to install at a 108 degree ICL. I think that would take care of the high rpm issue you mention.

1. What is "ICL"?

2. What high RPM issue are you saying I mention?
