Default emissions cam

I'm researching a sniffer friendly heads/cam setup.

I know the TR224/114 or 224R/114 cams will pass easily.

I talked to two local tuners about something a bit bigger.

Both recommended a 228/232 115LSA custom cam.

My end goal is a 401+ rwhp car that is daily drivable and sniffer
friendly.

I also am upgrading to a built A4 with a mild stall, 3000 or 3200.

Is the 228/232/115 cam more worthwhile than the 224 cams?
What heads would be a good match? 5.3s or LS6s?

Most states are moving to a non-sniffer test based on PCM codes. These are much easier to pass than a sniffer.

Anyway, I have a very small cam and ALWAYS had a hard time passing the sniffer in NY - even with a tune. At one point, these jokers even retroactively applied stiffer sniffers tests for older cars!!!!! That should not have been lawful but they did this anyway.

If I had to deal with a sniffer test, I would wait until the state went to PCM testing!

Good luck!

I wish that were true for California but we're stuck with visual AND sniffer.

There are ways around it but then it'll have to be some under the table kinda deal.

Go for the big cam, but add a set of Rhoads lifters. I think the combination will get you through the sniffer test easily, if you have a good tune of course.

With a decent set of heads and the TR224 you can crack 400 with a good tune easily. Figure that would be ok with CA emissions. It really depends on what compression your looking for inbetween the 5.3 and LS6 heads. They both flow similar #'s.
