Many double spring (valve springs) require machining out the seat pockets for a larger diameter spring setup.
I have never had to machine or otherwise modify my valve covers.
I have run 977's and 987's in the past.

The stock valve covers will be fine with any of the double springs. When running larger rockers would be about the only reason you'd need taller covers....

Different valve covers? Only need them if
1) You have something that looks cool,
2) Youe have bigger rockers arms, like what you would need with a solid roller (you could use spacers also if needed.
