Default Rebuilding Engine

Just wondering if you guys have any recommendations on a cam for my 98 LS1? I recently overlapped a connecting rod bearing and scored the crank. So my engine is out now and is going to get rebuilt within the next few days. I use the car as a daily driver. I don't want a real big cam but something to pep her up a bit. What else do I have to change when I change the cam? Any recommendations?

IMO, the ls6 cam is NOT worth the effort. Very little return on investment. Historically, the 224 cam is a good place to start, but in this day and age, with better tuning solutions available, a mid 230s cam is easily daily driven. I love my torquer 2 and many cars have put down 400+ RWHP with it or similar cams.

Agreed. Get something like a TR 224.

Any links to what cam you guys are talking about? I'm pretty well, totally illiterate when it comes to engine internals........although I'm starting to learn lately since I overlapped a connecting rod bearing. So if I change my cam, I have to change my valves/springs, lifters, etc.? What else has to be changed? What kind of costs am I looking at? How much for a cam, etc...????

Figure about 400 for a cam, or less if you find one on sale. I like the gold dual valvespring kits which run around 250. Then another 100 bucks for hardened pushrods. While youre in there, you may want to throw on an LS2 timing chain just for piece of mind, and thats about 28 bucks. If you plan on spinning the motor fairly high (over 6600 or so) then you may want to invest in stronger rod bolts. ARPs should be fine if your on a budget, but you can spring for katechs if you have to have the best of the best. The oil pump might be something to think about replacing if theres a ton of miles on the stocker.

Also, one thing to consider since the motor is out of the car already... Get your heads milled for some added compression. This really bumps up the low end torque and adds to the drivability and fun factor when you get a cam since the larger duration of a cam bleeds off dynamic compression and therefore torque.
