Bore Torque Plate Necessary?

About to get my engine bored to .007 and I had one machine shop tell me that it's necessary to torque plate the block before they do it. The other shops I called to get prices on never even mentioned it...Is it advisable to have it torque plated for an extra $150.00?

Yes. The function of a torque plate is to re-create the stresses and distortion caused by the head being bolted down. It will make sure your cylinders are straight and true.

+1. You want to get your block close to actual application before honing to get the cylinders as concentric as possible. For racing applications where tolerances are the tightest, some even bolt up the oil pump, motor mounts, etc before bore/honing. Also IIRC, GM does not hone with a torque plate, add in heat and wear and tear and you can understand why a torque plate is necessary.
