It's B.S. Old timers believed that running an OPEN header, with no exaust at all may bend a valve due to the inrush of cooler air into the header after the car is killed. Obviously cold air on a extremely hot valve could cause disfiguring, but I've never seen it. Point is, as long as you have an exaust system attached to the header, there is nothing to worry about. If he still doesn't believe you, tell him to check this thread in a day or so. I'm sure there are 86,000 cars on here with headers/no cats.

^^ Well put by Beast. It is definately an old timer thing. Even running long tube headers with no Y just open headers this isnt really possible. Now at the same time, I wouldnt pull spark plugs on a real hot motor for fear of something like this.

It might burn a valve is you ran open heads with no headers. You can run open headers all you want. The only problem you might run into with open headers is yoru oxygen sensors being skewed at low airflow due to reversion. But even still, a 12" to 18" piece of exhaust pipe past the o2 sensor is all you need to get rid of even that.

To sum up, your dad is misinformed.
