Default WTF? coolant temps going negative in the GTO

I had a 160 tstat put in my 04 GTO and it wouldnt open up all the way or close or whatever and caused my car to drop temperatures to negative numbers so I went back and bought a new stock tstat from a 04 vette(figured LSX engine...same parts) I put the new one in and it ran fine. No drop in temperature. Took it to the dealership to flush the radiator(have a trip to vegas coming up). Well the temperature is doing the same thing like the 160 was dropping temperature, just not as bad. Ill be driving normal and then all the sudden the temp gauge jumps up and down and the engine starts to rev up to sometimes 1300rpms and then back down. But the temperature gauge never hits over half way mark. Any guesses on what the problem could be? Could Pontiac have messed up the tstat when they did the flush?

Bad temp sensor maybe? False sensor readings making the VCM make inaccurate calculations based on the inaccurate readings? ie: calculating timing and air/fuel based off a 130 degree temp read from the sensor when the engine is really at 180. Just an idea, I'l let someone with some more knowledge post up

Bingo Wht01, it was the temp sensor. Its halfway broken off on the clip. I just pushed it back in and taped it up for the time being.
