Comp 918's...

Can I run these springs with the G5X2 cam? The specs are 232/240.... .595/608 114.

The Alchemist Jun 17, 2008 12:31 PM

I'd personally reccomend the PAC springs. PAC were the original suppliers to comp when the 918s came out, and when they left to soure them elsewhere is when comp had the problems with the 918s.

PAC makes a nitrided version of the beehive spring for our cars that is good for .650 lift.
Here's info:

And here's some pricing..

The new 918s are rated to .625 lift. They'll work fine.

BlackScreaminMachine Jun 17, 2008 06:34 PM

I have then in my VRx4 cam 228/230 @ 112 w/ lift below .600" they are the revised version.

twin74s Jun 17, 2008 10:39 PM

i have them on my texas speed 233/239 .595 .603 cam Been to 6800 many times already without a problem so far.

JJ 86 Jun 18, 2008 11:53 AM

These I believe are the older design. They have the blue stripe and are black. The pics of the newer design that I've seen have a silver look to them. These came with a new cam package that I bought here on the fourm. Not sure if these will work with the cam though (the previous owner bought them to use with the cam when he purchased the cam pkg).

twin74s Jun 19, 2008 12:24 AM

I have heard bad things about the older design with the stripe on them. Who knows the new ones could just be repainted ones. Like i said my combo has only about 500 miles on it but it has been to 6800 many times already.

BTW are you from springfield mo area, maybe on 417racing?

Why not use the PAC Springs? Lots of good things going around about them

The Alchemist Jun 19, 2008 06:43 AM

Either of the two pac springs are better. Why run the risk of using a spring that might break which would then cost you a lot more than $200-$250 for new springs.

Personally...after all the issues with the 918's, I won't be putting a Comp valvespring on my car.

I went overkill when I went with a smaller cam and threw on dual valvesprings.
Now, been beating on my Patriot springs with a 629/622 lift cam.
Probably go with Manley duals when these get to 15K miles.

Beaflag VonRathburg Jun 19, 2008 06:32 PM

There's nothing wrong with comp springs. It was only those batches of 918s that went out. I'll be using a set of revised 918s in my new engine and a set of 26089s once I get some money saved up.

Be careful with the manley's I believe you have to change up your valve seals I would stick with the patriots if your having good luck with them. Im running both the patriots and the 918's on both my cars and no problems with either.

Good info.

I hadn't really researched them yet, as it will be a few more years before getting to 15K on the current ones.

I have a quick question about 918s?

Sorry for the Hijack.

Can you use stock retainers and locks with the NEW 918s?

Yes you can. I did in mine.

The springs that break can break for a couple of reasons...

1) install error
2) improper breakin
3) spec'ed for the wrong cam
4) not allowing the springs to heat up before whacking it with high RPMS

I've seen Pat. Duals break, any spring can break.

Yes, it's the ones which break for NO REASON you have to worry about.
