i am doing a cam swap, and cant get the balancer off-it is an ATI 8 rib, and i even had it fit honed at the machine shop, and it went on perfect-i also used the crank pin kit, but as i said, it installed w/o a problem
i have a 3 hole balancer rem, and already broke 2 bolts-been rem them with this tool for years, but this is my first ls style-any ideas

 

you could try heating it with a heat gun or carefully with a blow torche. I've enver removed a supercharger pulley though so im really not sure.

 

If you try heat, remove the damper portion first. I am interested in how you resolve this as I am going to be removing mine in the fall. Did you use anti-seize when you installed it?

 

I got my ATI Superdamper off using a puller like this:

Interesting, the add states this under notes at the web site you linked: "Will not work with GM LS-based engines."

 

Hmmmmmmm...I wonder if someone just couldn't figure out how to make it work

...and I also had to buy the correct sizes bolts to fit the ATI superdamper bolt holes. Maybe that's why they put that note (the kit doesn't include the right diameter bolts for the LS1 superdamper)?

 

Did you use anti-seize when you installed? Just curious as yours came right off.

 

ok, i got it off-i installed new bolts, cranked down on it up to when i thought it was as much as i could get w/o breaking another bolt, and walked away-about 30 mins later, i heard it pop-then it came off
my balancer uses 5/16-18 bolts, i would imagine a stock one has metric
is the front cover gasket reusable? i thought some of the gaskets were
i had reused the lq4 cam retention plate, but think i will replace it this time

 

Here is a couple more hints that have been used in industrial applications for taper fits. Once you have what you think is the highest torque you want to use on the puller, then distribute heat evenly over the hub of the dampener. This can be even be done with a torch using map gas from your local hardware store. What also works is giving the head of the bolt a rap with a dead blow hammer. When using this method, it can look like an explosion when it lets go as all the parts go flying.

Nope...I never use anti-seize on the balancer. It does take some pretty massive effort at first, then it finally starts wiggling off easier as it makes its way off the snout.

 

Got a picture of this, is it the one with countersunk bolts?
