Default What are the dowels in the heads for?

What are the dowels between the heads and block for? Just to keep the gasket and head lined up correctly?

//aligns the head with the block....

...someone here took them off and re-assembled the motor/heads without them....it was not a good move....he had to take it apart, replace the gasket and use a new set of bolts...boo
