Default Broken timing chain question.

Well racing at US41 last night at the 1000 ft mark motor just quit. Pulled the front end apart[ gotta get puller for pulley] the chain is broke there was no noise and when I crank it over theres no noise what are the chances I bent the valves? and whats the easiest way to tell if the valves are bent?

If you broke the timing chain, it's 100% that there are bent valves and damaged pistons. If the cam stops but the crank continues to spin, some of the cylinders will be left with their valves open and the pistons will hit them.

Yup, you've definitely got some damage. Especially since the motor was running high rpm when the chain went. Hopefully it will only be valves and no damaged pistons. I've even heard of one case where some connecting rods got bent. Dont ask me how. What cam were you running? What pulley did you have on the car? I always hate these posts as I'm pressing my luck with the stock chain. Good luck to ya. Also, dont try to turn the motor over anymore...you may just end up causing more damage.

Mike, I broke a timing chain once, and I bent all the intake valves, what happened? You have a cam in the car right?

I have the pulley removal tools if you want to grab them.

These were overhead cam motors and lots of those are non-interference motors. The LS1 is an interference style unfortunately. Dang, you broke a Rollmaster chain? You didnt happen to have an SLP pulley on there did you? How many miles on your setup?

I don't have much to say, but this is a good reminder to go with double chains (and double springs). A bit of redundancy is worth it!

Tell me about it the shop recommended this chain though so who can recommend a easy to install double roller dont want this to happen again.

Yah, I am always wondering how bad I am gambling by using the stock chain. Strange you broke that one.

Jorday, all I can say is I lost sleep at night thinking about having the stock chain so 2x Rollmaster went on when it was heads and cam time.

They always say; "The Rollmaster timing set comes with the Iwis Ketten chain. The best chain available"

Supposidly much better quality than the GM spec'd Renold chain.

So, what the deal with this superior chain breaking?

The Rollmaster timing set is made up with timing gears produced by ROMAC/Rollmaster in Australia. The chain is made by Iwis Ketten (Jwis) in Germany. Rollmaster does not produce chain.

BTW, the stock GM chain is produced in England by Renold.

When I did heads/cam om my '00 formula I didn't replace the stock timing chain. It broke after about a year. I haven't assessed the damage yet. should know in 4-6 weeks.

I was thinking about going with the rollmaster.

Wow, I'm certainly suprised to read that you broke a Rollmaster chain...... but this got me thinking (and I'm sure this has been discussed at some point before) but why is there no gear drive timing set for the LS1 from like Pete Jackson or something? I would think a billet gear drive timing set would be more reliable and less likely to break than a timing chain, but what do I know.

Anyhow, I'm glad I got the double roller...
