Default Head & Cam combo

I am putting together a forged 346, the motor will consist of:
Stock crank polished
Compstar 6.125 rods
Diamond pistons with -2cc reliefs
PRC 2.5 5.3 heads with 59cc
.040 head gaskets
The cam I am going to run is:
230/230 .591/.591 114LSA+4
I am wondering how well you guys think this cam would work with the PRC heads.Should I look into maybe the LS6 heads instead?TIA

I bet they would work pretty damn well, but after spending time and money on the lower end, why not try some AFR or TFS heads? They'd probably work a bit better than the LS6s...

I think the extra $1000 that could go to TFS heads could be spent on a 150 shot. Will The TFS heads add 150hp over the 5.3's?

p.s. I already know the answer.

OP, your build looks a lot like my plans except I will prolly go bigger on the cam.

It's just a matter of how much the OP has to spend. Will the ported stock castings perfom better and be more durable than AFR or TFS?

p.s. I already know the answer.

The fact that he's considering ported factory heads over the high dollar ones means he's probably on a budget, by choice or otherwise.

Well the reason I am wanting to stay with ported factory castings is because in about a year or so these heads will come off and I will put a set of AFR heads on with a 72cc to drop the compression for a Turbo kit.So for now I am happy to have just factory ported heads. So for my combo would the 5.3 or LS6 heads be better?

I'd seriously consider making due with the 72cc AFRs right now. The compression won't make that big of a difference. Moving from 10:1 to 11:1, we're only talking about a 2% increase in hp.

Do it this way and you'll save money and time. You might even be able to burn regular gas.

Both would probably deliver similar power. I've seen 5.3's put down excellent power, and I would run them because I've seen fewer combos built that way, and I like to be slightly different. An odd reason for sure, but you'll be happy with either one for the year until the AFR's and turbo kit wake the dragon. Good luck!
