Default Spun Bearing...Now What??

well i took my car to hpe and they said i have a spun bearing. they found copper shavings in my oil filter. so obviously this sucks monkey *****. i have a $5k spending limit. i want to spend the least amount possible, but not half *** anything. so im lookin for some opinions or different options. here is what im thinking. i was gonna do forged internals, but thats gonna be too much right now. so i wanna refresh the engine with all new seals, bearings, and rings. and a ls6 oil pump, ls2 timing chain, ls7 lifters, lifter trays, valve springs, ms3/t-rex cam, and an ls6 intake. right now i have a quote of $4k from brian at pavlock with out the ls6 intake. i will get that on my own and put it on. basically the $4k includes about $1700 for parts, $1300 r&r, and $1000 for labor, machine work, and a dyno tune. so that is the plan as of now. so if yall now a cheaper or more cost effecient way to do this let me know. and i would try to rebuild it myself, but i dont have anywhere to do it and by the time i do it would be christmas and i dont know if my engine will hold up that long and i want this done asap. thanks folks.

p.s. my overall goal is about 400-450rwhp. eventually i will be getting ported and polished heads to try and accomplish this.

this sounds familiar, i did it 3 months ago, but im going all out on my rebuild. go to different machine shops around town and get some more quotes. Most will assemble your engine for a few hundred bucks. Skip on the crank and rods, they will hold, just upgrade the rod bolts. focus on cylinder heads and cam to achieve your power goal.

I can guarantee that you messed up your crank. I'd be shocked if at the very least you don't have the get it turned. Most times as long as it isn't too bad you can repair the stocker though.

for sure its gotta be turned, but im hoping its not so bad that i have to get another one. them bitches are expensive. and the knocking isnt that loud, its actually pretty quiet. so im hoping its not too bad. i know i keep using "hoping", but thats all i can do right now. haha. im gonna call around the houston area to some more sponsors and get some more quotes before i go ahead. but i need to get it in the shop this week to be done in time. i leave to go back to arkansas around mid september.

The $4000 sounds like a pretty good deal if thats turn key with no hidden fees.

Its good. It has a little cam surge and takes it a minute to find its Idle every now and then but its not bad at all. You also have to remember my car is an auto. It would probly even have better manners with a 6 speed. Fyi my car made 400 to the wheels with the a4 and loose converter. I was told if it were a 6 speed it would have been closer to 450 hp. I also have patriot heads though.
what cam do you plan on going with? I am fixing to start on my 6.0 build here real soon.

i was thinkin ms3 or t-rex, but now im not real sure. i guess i need to sit down with whomever i decide to build my engine and discuss what cam will best suit my set up. i want something streetable since this will be my dd, but i want some power. so i will have to do some compromising. im just ready to get all this done, cuz this is all i want from my engine. then i can move on to the asthetics on the car. it for sure needs some tlc. if youve got 400 with your current set up i can only imagine what that 6.0 is gonna be puttin out.

Go with a cam 238/240 duration with the 6.0 from what I have seen the larger 6.0 can handle a little more duration and still be street friendly. I am going to get some one like patric G or pretator Z to spec one for me.

I've got a balanced and blue printed 408 short block that will fit your budget and give you a solid base. You can re-use your ls1 stuff and save money. I'll pm you with some details. A forged short block is the way to go.

hey chris. that motor does sound good, but i would have to find somebody to take my old one out and put the new one in. and i think with that i would be over $4K. i mean if i could get that motor and get it put in all for $4K, then i would be game. but i know thats not the case. and i another problem is i wont have the money until i graduate this training program mid september, and as soon as i graduate i have to leave the houston area. so i need it worked on now and then pay when i receive my bonus. again, i appreciate the input. if i could i would.

So....how bad have you been beating on it? I just wonder because I see this in different threads from time to time and people say they have not been beating on them. You use some N20 or just wrap it to the moon? Will the forged rods correct the problem or is it in the oil pump?

Chris
