Hey guys, I need some help identifying an LS2. I am going to look at one tonight or tomorrow and I want to make SURE I am getting what I pay for. It seems I need to look for a casting number of 12568952, which should be located on the back of the block, kind of behind the flexplate. I also should look for 243 head casting numbers (which are stamped on the outside of the head right? You don’t have to pull the valve covers?) I read that some LS2s have 799 heads, what does that tell me? Finally, there should be a gray CPS to indicate that it has the 58x reluctor.

Is all of this information correct? Please let me know.

aluminum plus cam position sensor on the front cover = LS2 plain and simple.

 

Great! I thought I was getting to in depth. There is no possibility of it being an LS1,4, or 6 is there? Those are all aluminum too. The cam position sensor isn't on the front of those others is it?

it is stamped 6.0 right on the front of the block...there is also no provision for the cam position sensor in the back of the engine

 

I was thinking that. So, if they all have it, why does that make it an LS2 specifc feature? I will make sure to check for the displacement stamping too, thanks. Those heads I listed (243s and 799s) are what's supposed to be on the LS2, right?

Alex said if it is aluminum, and has a cam position sensor on the front cover, than it is an LS2. And I thought the LS1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and some aluminum truck 5.3s had the cam sensor in the same place.

 

ls1/6...5.3..the cam position sensor is in the rear of the block next to the oil pressure sending unit...block stamped 5.7

ls2/3/7..l92... is aluminum with the cam position sensor in the front timing cover..
ls2 stamped 6.0
ls3/l92 stamped 6.2
ls7 stamped 7.0
