My experience in 2000...

I broke a Cloyes timing chain, single, on a built 10:1 346ci.

It may have been install error.

I think that the bolts that hold the gear in may have backed out.

I lost the chain going about 30mph from a toll plaza and bent all the intake valves and two exhaust valves.

I personally feel that mine due to a faulty install of the chain since I also had some other mechanical problems.

Me too, stock GM.
FWIW, the Cloyes set includes a stock GM/Renolds chain also.

Don't forget to consider the % of people running these chains. I am sure the majority are running the stock chain. So you should see more breakage of these even if it is a smaller percentage of the chains produced that break with the stock chain versus aftermarket.

Exactly. Obtaining just a number of occurrences by manufacturer can be very misleading because it doesn't take into account the installed population that is being sampled.

There are more stock chains by far that any other brand. You're gonna get a huge number of stock chains broken but it doesn't mean the stock chain breaks "more" than aftermarket ones. It may very well be that if data is adjusted for population being sampled, another brand is more prone to failure.

IMHO, the numbers coming out of this survery will me of little value...

Also the majority of folks dont make more than 350 or so RWHP. How many of the stock broken chains were on stock or mildly modified engines?

How much HP did the cars that broke the double chains have, and what were the circumstances?

If your abusing the engine you can break about anything.

I don't see how the Rollermaster could brake. I have put 25K miles on mine and its still tight as can be.
