i think emery cloth is more consistant as an abrasive than sandpaper, and because its metal, its alot better to use that on other metals, and you will get a consistant and clean finish.

Try wet-or-dry black (silicon carbide grains, not aluminum oxide) paper and use it wet. WD40 is a good lube for this. Use the paper backed stuff, not the cloth backed stuff. Lowes or your automotive paint store should have it in 9 x 11 sheets. You can cut it into strips to use. It is very thin and very flexible.

If you are just removing some flash rust, try 400 grit (wet) and when it's cleaned off, finish with 600 grit, always wet. 1200 is a waste because it won't remove anything except the scratches from 600. 600 will give you the surface finish (smoothness) you need. Clean thoroughly between grits.

If 400 doesn't remove the rust, etc, start with 220 or 320 and progress to 400 and 600. In this case, you should be rotating the cam mounted in a lathe to prevent changing the shape of the lobes/journals.

If there are small pits, don't try to remove material down to the bottom of the bits. IOW, little "innies" don't hurt, but "outies" do. If you have scratches that 220 doesn't remove, you might need to replace the cam. Show it to a good engine builder or cam guy first.

Good luck.

Well i used the aluminum oxide one and used WD40 with it, itd take a week just to remove any material or to change the shape of it. I was just removing some prints from the lifters and some black crap on the cam. The 400 grit aluminum oxide worked really well. This was on an LS6 cam. I also checked home depot but they dont sell emery anymore and not sure where a lowes is in my area.

Your sig say Dallas, TX. Here's the 20 nearest Lowes:

FWIW, emery cloth is usually cloth backed and not a good idea for this application.

I will venture a guess that you have at least one automotive paint store in the Big D area. You'll find wet-or-dry up to 2000 or even 3000 grit there.

Hey it was just free advice....and worth everything you paid for it. You solved your problem without it. Good for you.
