Top reasons to buy coated bearings (cam|rod|main)...
1. Startup protection
2. Oil pressure loss protection. (seems logical that it would allow a few extra seconds of protection in the event of oil starvation.
Any other benefits? Who has the highest quality control standards over their bearing coatings? Any deviation in thickness could conceivably cause an oil-wedge to develop.
Will the coating wear-out quickly and subsequently open up the tolerances or are the tolerances closer to begin with due to the coating thickness?

Not many people here run coatings on the bearings. It makes clearances tighter a little bit, but it can be accounted for in your build. Shouldn't ever wear off unless the oil film is under so much stress that you get metal to bearing contact. Not something that is necessary for a street car in my opinion, but if you got cash to burn, why not?
