DriveATransAm: I only lost compression in one cylinder, #7, like shown. All of the other cyl's have compression. Yes, the retainers and springs are being changed.

offaxis: comp 978's

mike m: yes these are the springs with the clearance problems, hence the tore up Ti retainers. Yes, Terry is standing behind them 100%, it's just unfortunate that this has happened.

PSJ: It's smaller than the G5X-2...

-Steve
He says his are comp 978's ... that is what I have on mine also. If they are "patriot springs".. who makes them?

I have those springs on my car but my titanium retainers arent all chewed up . Why would there be any clearence problem with these springs? I run the stock rockers also . Any info would be greatly appriciated

Jeremy
I didn't have clearance issues on mine either, they were close.. but never touched, I guess that it is a "case to case" thing. I went ahead and changed out to Yella terra's just to be on the safe side.

Yes, 978's are Comp springs. They are good springs actually. Speaking of TEA, when Brian broke a comp 987 on his car he went to the 978's, so I believe they are quite good springs. You can't expect any spring to hold up if the rocker is beating the **** out of the retainer thousands of times a minute.....

Werd. If the rockers had been clearanced this all could have been avoided (I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, just trying to point out that they shouldn't have been allowed to hit). Those springs NEVER would have broken on an unobstructed spring/retainer. Those are MASSIVE springs and are more than enough for that cam.

hey if this hurt your motor is patriot going to cut you a check? or is he just going to fix the head? did they know the size of the cam you were using?

I don't think the motor is hurt. TSP sold me the head/cam combo, the Comp 978's are way strong enough for this cam.

if these springs that everyone has with the clearance issues are going to start breaking, is patriot going to send them all new springs too. this seems like a big pain in the ***, i hope the poor guys who went out and bought yella terras dont wind up breaking springs after spending all that money.
I bet patriot will send out new springs, terry has good cust. service like that.
What do the yella's ahve to do with this? They probably will fix any problems.

The springs are made by Comp, they are Comp 978's, they came with the heads, terry simply installs them, not makes them.

offaxis: with different heads, maybe yours have a different installed height?

HeritageLS1: A broken spring on my car didn't sound like anything out of the ordinary! For me, it just studdered and shook at low rpm's, 1k->2k on all upshifts, the inner spring could not return the valve all the way with the large outer spring binded around.

JF WS6 is 100% right, comp is not going to warrant these springs since they were not installed correctly on my car. They were not clearanced and did not perform under the normal stress that they should have been put through.

New question: If I change my springs and then do a comp test on the 'broken' piston has good comp, should I still pull the head to cheak to see if I have any other issues? It looks to me like I broke a spring, and the inner spring saved the motor from becoming a paperweight.
What other issues can I be looking at here from a broken spring?
thanks
-Steve

Do you suggest changing the retainers? Doesn't seem down on power and the rockers are clearanced now.

Yeah, the more I read and talked to Steve, I kinda leaned towards that too. At least this shows that vendors will do what it takes when things go wrong.

If you've clearanced the rockers, then no. You're fine, IMO.

If the rocker arm isnt clearenced and is resting on the retainer the valve wont close all the way. Clearence those rocker arms then check compression again, that will fix it unless the spring is broken.

The spring is broken, and I am getting new stock diameter springs so I wont have to clear the rockers.

If I was gonna pop the retainers off, I could have just as easily change the springs and didnt have the time to mess with it at this point. And I am under the assumption that once I installed the YT's - I wouldnt have to worry about the clearance issues anymore and the "chewing up" would cease.

I did change the oil though after the YT install just to make sure nothing was floating around in the motor. Everything looked clean.
