Default LS1 Waterpump on LS2 Warning!

Now I'm not sure if this issue is because I bought an OAW waterpump and it was assembled using the wrong bolts or if this would have been the same with a GM waterpump. But here's what I found.

I am using LS1 F-body accesories on my '07 'vette LS2 in my '71 Camaro. When I installed the waterpump, I noticed that it didn't sit quite right on the gaskets. In fact, when I tightened the bolts it seemed fine, but I had to replace the bolts on one side for my supercharger and when I pulled them out, with the other side still tight, the gasket just fell out. Actually, the gap doubled in size and here's what I found.

The lower 3 10mm head bolts on the back of the pump were sitting so high that the pump was held off of the block by the timing chain cover. I know the LS2 pump uses a giant frost plug on the back of the pump, so this is not an issue. I don't know if the timing covers are different, so all I did was grind the heads of the bolts down till they didn't touch the timing cover without a gasket installed.

The pic shows the bolts in question backed out for reference only.

Just thought I would post this as it could have been easily missed and would have no doubt lead to either a leak or a hole in the timing cover.

That's interesting. I use a GM waterpump on my LS2 402 without a problem.

I ran into this issue while installing my LS1 waterpump on the LS7 build I did. What I came to find out was the LS1 timing cover on my stock LS1 block had a slight indention where that part of the back of the waterpump sat. The LS2 and LS7 cover does not have this since the pump and drive acc. from these 2 engines come out farther then the LS1 by a tad. When I first bolted it up it was something I didn't noticed and when I snugged it up those 3 bolts cracked my LS2 timing cover. The bolts protrude just slightly farther then the LS2 pump and LS7 water pump bolts. I eliminated this problem by getting 3 countersunk allen head bolts and replacing them on my pump. It's funny how when I came across this 3 years ago during my LS1 to LS7 conversion in my F-Body..........nobody else had this problem!? When I went to check into this at the stealership we found there to be about 3 different versions of the LS1 waterpump............what the differances were I don't know??

They were not . What I'm trying to say is the LS1 cam to life in 97', now wouldn't you think that they change some parts on it. Ex. the timing cover, water pumps and **** like that. But hey don't listen to me I just saying because mine worked.

Back from the dead (post that is). I'm bolting my LS1 pump on my 2 piece edelbrock LS2 timing chain cover and its leaking everywhere, come to find out that the pump is having the same problems as shown above. I'm considering grinding the bolts down but I'd almost prefer to grab an LS2 pump if there is one around and available.

For those doing an LS1 to LS2 conversion, BEWARE!!!!! The bolts contact the cover and prevent you from properly sealing!

Well your lucky the water pump leaked so you found out right away. Mine actually pushed the bolts through the timing cover and then i had an annoying leak of oil that i had no clue where it was coming from!

Default Does anyone have an update on this issue.

I'm putting an '07 vette LS2 in a '73 vette and am using the 98-02 F-body accessory brackets. Can the LS1 WP pulley be pressed on to the LS WP? Or, is the bolt head grinding the only solution? I'm getting ready to order the LS1 WP and would like to know my options.

Thanks,
Carl
