Default Sound clip of strange noise

I have been chasing this weird whining noise around while my car has been sitting for the winter. The camera actually picked it up a bit very well, its not quite as loud in person. Any ideas what this could be? The engine hasnt shown any signs of damage, it pulls like it always has and gas mileage hadnt gone down when i put it away for the winter. I spoke with don from slowhawk, he built the engine, and he seemed to think that it wasnt something catastrophic. Ive driven it for atleast 200 miles with the sound. Last oil change there were a small amount of shavings in the oil.

any ideas?

Sounds like a bad/dry power steering pump. Does the sound change when you turn your wheel side to side while parked? #2 guess would be a worn serp belt.

What's the prize for a correct diagnosis?

I just got an email from Don at slowhawk. He thinks it might ahve something to do with the clutch setup??? I cant imagine what it would be unless its a bad bearing in there or something.

I checked my power steering fluid and although it wasnt topped off i could still see it on the dipstick, so im assuming its not that low. Im going to top it off regardless...

I think it sounds like a bad power steering pump too but the pump is on the other side of the engine. Im at school right now so i cant try anything.

Is there any way for me to tell if its a specific pully or the belt? Im going to top off the pump when i go home.... I really dont think its the pump, the sound seems wayyyy louder on the p side of the engine. Don from slowhawk thought it might eb related to the clutch setup??? i dont know how.

Just use the old screw driver trick, grab a long screw driver put the metal end on the pulley and hold your ear on the other end it will help pin point were the noise is coming from

Take the belts off and start the engine for a few seconds. If the noise is still there you know it's not any one of the pulley's.

Good idea.... could it be the water pump? I can't see that being the clutch setup, nor does it sound like a internal motor problem

OK, so next time im home ill take off the belt and see if the noise stops. If it is an acc. on the belt like the water pump, what should i do?

I have an offer to go to the track this friday and run with some really cool cars (new zr1, a couple other f-bodies, ferraris etc). I want to go badly but i dont want to risk damaging my engine.

UPDATE:
I went home today and popped the serp belt off to see if the noise stopped. Sure enough, no serpentine belt no high-pitched whine.

So, its got to be something on the serpentine system. A water or steering pump maby? How should i go about diagnosing a bad steering/water pump or whatever else it may be? I dont have AC. When I turned the pullies by hand i didnt hear any noise or feel any resistance.

Thanks,

SM

Find or make a wooden stick similar to a short broom handle and hold the end of it on the power steering pump and then hold it with the end on the water pump.

Obviously you listen with your ear on the other end of the wooden stick.

Or perform a test with a couple of rockers and injectors first. After listening to a couple of injectors and rockers you will discover the difference in sound between the injectors and rockers.

Place the end of the stick on the top of the valve cover approximately where each rocker is. Do the same for a couple of injectors by placing the end of the stick on each injector.

Finally perform the same test on the water and power steering pumps to determine if noise is from the water or power steering pump.

You didn't by any chance change the power steering rack recently and forget to purge it of air?

Alright, so basically use a stick to make a stethoscope. I havent touched the steering rack since i bought the car, 10k miles ago it may have been replaced by the PO. But that work was done by Don Kinder (slowhawk), not the owner... so i trust it.

I have had a bad alternator make this same noise. Either that, or the PS pump going bad.

Have you made any further progress? I just started to hear the same sound under the same conditions in 00 Camaro. I took a look at the power steering fluid and it looks like some coolant has leaked into the power steering fluid. I can both smell it and see that the fluid looks milky white. You might want to double check the power steering pump fluid for water contamination.

Based on his sig - appears that it is a 98. I don't think 98's had a power steering cooler like the later models so a contaminated system from antifreeze unlikely.

However, air in the power steering system will make the fluid look milky looking.
