Red face Throttle by cable on 58x reluctor?

I have been told you cant put a throttle by cable on a 58x reluctor. Why ? I see guys putting carburetors on them. Why wouldnt this work? I am trying to put an already built 2004r behind an LS3. I need the throttle by cable to hook up the TV shift cable. Also it has a lockup torque converter I need to hook up. Where is there a ported or timed vacuum source on an LS3 engine? Thanks for your help. Scott!

because the computers on the 58x are all drive by wire. meaning the look for logic on the APP (accelerator pedal position assembly) and the TAC (throttle actuator control) and use those to control the engine. They also use the TAC for cruise control and IAC controls as well as traction control and cold starts and torque management. The reason people use them carbd is the fact that there is no electronic fuel injection controls on them. They use the timing module from MSD and go. Timed vacuum is not a good term when talking about an engine that is not normally equipped with a dizzy. You can pull the ported vacuum from right before the TB itself, but there is no other source of vacuum pulloff before that because nobody needs it. Speaking strictly for fuel injection. And on that type of system there should not be a need for it anyway. It would only be needed for a vacuum advance distributor. You can run a 58x engine in a fuel injected vehicle by running the 58x converter box. If you are using a cable driven PCM like the Fbody one or some truck one, then it will work. Then you just need the setup to run the right stud for your kickdown cable.

The problem is, without knowing your whole setup, you can only speak in general terms.

Thanks for all the info. 1 question though, is there a timed vacuum port at the throttle body or will I have to drill and tap one? Where would I position it so it is timed and not full manifold vacuum? Thanks in advance for your help!

why are you looking for this type of vacuum? you would have to make your own port yes. there is a port on some that is misleading, it appears to go to the back of the TB that is ported to the manifold and not before the throttle plate.

o ok. well I have used a normal electrical switch in the past on a 700r4. it worked very well. or use a lockup controller. those would be easier ways besides vacuum lockup.

Don't use the vacuum controlled lockup switch. Get the B&M lockup control. It's speed controlled, and adjustable, and is a lot better than the vacuum controlled type. It will cost more but it's worth it.

I do not know what type of car you are building. But, I am going to try and answer your question about finding a vacuum source. Your car no doubt has vacuum assisted power brakes. Look there to find a vacuum source to tap into. A small T in the brake vacuum line will work and provide the vacuum needed to shift an older tranny.

Also, if you have a big motor causing low vacuum, say 10 inches or less, then install a vacuum tank. These tanks can be purchased from Summit or Jegs for a nominal amount of money. You can also tap the tank with appropriate fittings to provide an additional vacuum source, such as for your tranny installation.

You simply attach the hose leading from the motor to the brake booster to the canister and from there to the brake booster. The canister will provide more than enough extra vacuum to operate whatever you like. Hope this helps.

thanks. It cant be manifold vacuum as you use with power brakes. It has to be timed or ported vacuum. Regards, Scott!
