Damn sure dont use purple power. I learned the hard way. Its 11.5-12.5ph corrodes aluminum quickly...and rinsing with water doesnt prevent it.
Simple green I think is a good option (9.5ph), but sure isnt as strong, for cutting gunk/grease. Luckily, when I bought my car, the only gunk was on the steering rack, so it wasnt too bad, getting everything cleaned up under there.
Im not sure, but I think a steam cleaner would by best. Itd be nice if some professional detailers would chime in.

I used to use the Engine Brite cleaner in the can while at the car wash, used to spray the engine with the hot soapy water then use a can of engine brite, let it sit while you wash the rest of the car and then rinse it off when done. Worked great on my LS2 in my trailblazer ss
