Default Broken valve spring.

Hello, I drive a 00 Camaro and I'm about 90% sure one of my valve springs broke tonight on my way home. My question is this, can the valve spring take anything else with it? Will I have to replace the whole head or what? Thank you for looking !

If the valve drops into the cylinder, there could be a lot of damage. Sometimes the spring just cracks but still supports the valve and this would be great. Don't run the motor at all. Did you remove the valve cover yet?

Negative, I just got it parked and its 11 PM here, I do not have a garage or anything just living in the barracks on a navy base. I plan to yank it off and take a closer look tomorrow.

First, what makes you think it is a valve spring? What were the symptoms? I broke one on the track a few months back and it was immediately apparent (LOUD tapping noise, extreme loss of power, etc). It ended up destroying the piston in that cylinder, the intake valve, that head, and bits of molten aluminum traveled through the intake to other cylinders. I was lucky as the block came away virtually unharmed.

Do not start it. the quickest preliminary look for damage in the cylinder is pulling the plugs. if any are mangled then you probably floated a valve into the piston and did some pretty good damage. Depending on what you find there, pull one or both valve covers and inspect the springs, rockers, and the rest of the valvetrain.

What base are you on?

Pretty much the same symptoms, loud tapping noise, extreme loss of power and car didnt want to idle. Also, the location of the sound and the way it changed pitch with engine rpm. I'm headed out to take off the valve covers now. I work on hawaii at an I.T. base about 30 minutes from pearl harbor.

It isn't a valve spring, the noise kinda sounds like a coin being thrown around in a washing machine. It gets louder and faster when gas is applied. Also sounds like its coming from the bottom of the engine. Any ideas? would a video help?

Here it is.

Sounds like (hopefully!) an exhaust leak, maybe some other stuff going on, hard to tell...

I would love it to be an exhaust leak. Just saying that is a possibility has made my day lol thank you.

Well if you were in San Diego I'd help. I think an exhaust leak is not likely or at least not the only problem. The idle and power loss points to something else. Put a code scanner on it and see what DTCs come up.

You could prolly check a few plugs, an exhaust leak will make the engine show lean. Plugs will be black from the added fuel if there's a leak...

I will check this Monday after work and get back to you. Thank you for the ideas guys. I called a shop to ask what they thought it might be and they said rod bearing, what do you guys think the possibility of that is?

I think with the deep sound it is making and the rpm it is doing it at, it seems like bearings more than upper end.

Yeah I called a local shop and explained the sound as best I could and they are leaning towards a rod bearing. If that is the case, how hard is it to fix and can it be done without pulling the engine?

Small update. Haven't been able to pull the filter off or change oil but the dipstick comes back w/out any metal shavings which i hear is a tell tale sign of a rod bearing.

You wont always see metal shavings, but you may notice a metallic tinge to the oil or see quite a few flakes in the oil.
