Default LS2 Cam Sensor, 1x or 4x??

On my '06 GTO LS2, I understand that the cam sensor should be a 1x type, black in color. The one currently installed is tan which I also understand to be 4x type. I can't seem to find the correct one, however. When I search under an '06 GTO they all seem to be the tan 4x type. If I cross reference this part number it says it will also fit later gen IV engines, which tells me it is a 4x.

The part # on the one I have is 12585545. It also has a "4" on it. Is this a 4x sensor? Where can I get a 1x sensor?

BTW, when I test ran the engine a while back it was hard to start at times, (Backfiring) and had a check engine light. Can the engine even run with a 4x sensor? The crank sensor seems to be the correct one, a 24x type, black in color.

Thanks!

The part number is wrong... It's GM part # 12576407 for the 1x sprocket and even Amazon carries it. The engine will not run with a 4x sprocket so don't run it or you'll be sorry.

I'm just concerened about the sensor. The engine has never been apart so i would assume the cam gear/reluctor is a 1x style.

After more research i found that some are saying an early gen IV will run with the 4x sensor. But i also read that cam sensors can cause my starting problems so i was really hoping i found the problem!

No 2004-06 GTO came with a 4x cam sprocket. If it's never been apart, it has a 1x sprocket/ 24 tooth reluctor wheel and it can't run with a 4x sprocket. I don't know where you are getting your information from, but I'm not sure that you know enough to be working on the motor.

I know that 04 - 06 GTO's came with 24x/1x! My question from the start has not been about relucters and sprockets but the cam sensor alone! I don't need a sprocket.

These engines came from the factory with blacks sensors, I have a black crank sensor and tan cam sensor, #12585545. I thought that was causing my starting problem but I saw a couple references from this and other forums that a 4x cam sensor will work with the 1x cam gear.

Do I need to use a 1x sensor or will a 4x sensor work?

The 4x sensor will work on both 1x and 4x cam gear.
