L83 air pump, ac compressor

Default L83 air pump, ac compressor

I am trying to get all my ducks in a row before starting the conversion on my 1989 silverado.

I have 2014 l83. There is a vacuum pump on the drivers side where I need to mount a power steering pump. Does the engine really need this? Also can I use the ac compressor? I have been told it is variable capacity and will not work. Is there some way to make it run off of 12 volts at 100%?

Ok answered my own question about the vacuum pump. It is used for the brake booster so I should be able to install a electric pump for that. But can I mount a power steering pump in it place?

Default L83 Swap

Hello Frige. I am about to start doing the L83 swap into a 1970 Chevy C10. I have done extensive searches for information, but as you know there is very little out on the GenV engines at this time. About 4 hrs ago (no kidding) I spoke to a well known company (Dirty Dingo) and I was informed that they will have a new line of parts for the L83. I was told they got patents on some new brackets to solve the power steering problem. Also they got engine mounts and a new front accessory redesign system. The time line I was given was 2 weeks. Dirty Dingo has been working on these products for over a year. Production has started and parts will be available for purchase in 2 weeks.
I have done LS2,LS1,LM7,and the New Coyote 5.0 swaps, this can't be any more difficult. Good luck.

I am pulling the original engine today weather permitting and getting started on the install. So I will need to figure out what to do with the steering.

Me too. I got my L83/6L80e today. I got the factory wire harness off without any problems. I have some new photos to share. I post them tomorrow.

I've seen people swap to the Corvette water pump and alt bracket. This moves the water pump pulley to the pass side and clears up room for an f-body style power steering pump. Street and Performance actually has a kit to do this.

Hello Frige. Did you ever figure out if you can use the original AC compressor?

No I have been concentrating on some of my other projects until more parts were available for this swap. But honestly I dont see why it wouldnt work. From talking to a chevy tech he said that without input the compressor runs at 100% kinda like a normal compressor dont you think? If I am wrong maybe someone can clue me in.
