I really don't have a budget in mind, but I'm figuring it would take a minimum of $7k to $8k. I've been looking at and considering shortblocks on TMS's site or finding one in a junk yard. I could either put the engine in my T/A or save it for another vehicle like a C5 or C6 vette. Let me know what steps you guys think I should take.
For your modest goals, you can get that done with stock LS3 heads and a good valve job. Of course, there is more power possible with good aftermarket castings if your budget allows. Lots of guys on here running TMS shortblocks.

Agreed, I'm expecting just over 600hp with factory 0821 heads on our 416 once completed.

So whats the cost comparison of building a short block with a new or used block as opposed to spending the $4000 to to $5300 on a complete one. Also, as far as forged crank, rods and pistons and how do I figure which brand or style. I beam, H-beam, dished, flat top pistons?

I have had machinist complain that the aluminum LS blocks get a little out of shape after they have been in service for a while, but we always preferred "seasoned" iron blocks to new ones.

So I've been looking into the costs of building the shortblock starting with a new block. It looks like the costs are about the same or more than purchasing one from a vendor already assembled. My figures were almost $4k for just the block, bearings, and rotating assembly, I haven't even figured machine work. I think it makes much more economic sense to just purchase one now.
