Alternator wire burning itself up?

Alternator wire burning itself up? Kind of afraid the alternator may be bad. I have a LH6 (5.3 alum block). The cord that actually attaches to the alternator is glowing hot when on, and it has burned through the rubber cap on it. I've been smelling a rubber smell lately, and thought it might be my new belts wearing in, but I found out it was the rubber cap that has been smelling. The rest of the cap is very brittle, and like I said, the connection point is glowing.

The whole wire is glowing red or just the connection? And is it only hot when the car is running but cools off when the car is off? If its just the connection glowing and stops when the car is off, the connection is probably just loose and is arcing like a welder causing all the heat.
