Alternator wire burning itself up?

Default Alternator wire burning itself up?

Kind of afraid the alternator may be bad. I have a LH6 (5.3 alum block). The cord that actually attaches to the alternator is glowing hot when on, and it has burned through the rubber cap on it. I've been smelling a rubber smell lately, and thought it might be my new belts wearing in, but I found out it was the rubber cap that has been smelling. The rest of the cap is very brittle, and like I said, the connection point is glowing.

Test the output for voltage/amperage. ALSO check the connection in general for bad wiring, etc.

Glowing red sounds as if there is a dead short in that wire to ground. That wire run to starter, or somewhere else?

The whole wire is glowing red or just the connection? And is it only hot when the car is running but cools off when the car is off? If it’s just the connection glowing and stops when the car is off, the connection is probably just loose and is arcing like a welder causing all the heat.

You're probably right. Yeah its not the whole cord, just the connection point. I'll check it out tomorrow, and try to get a volt meter to check it.

Better yet, just look REAL closely at the connection itself. I would bet it was pretty shaky. Run a new connector and a fresh wire, and you should be good!

What gauge wire are you using, that makes a difference.
Make sure the lug is crimped on properly, got a good crimp tool?
