Default LS3 head milling

I am planning an LS3 build and want to get the compression up to about 11.5. I have figured I need the cc volume to be about 65.5 but I don’t know if that will be too much much material and would be better going to the LS9 head.

What is the stock combustion chamber volume on an LS3? I keep seeing conflicting information. The head I was looking at was the Chevy LS3 CNC that is advertised at 68cc but I’ve seen sites claiming they are 70cc.

LS3 CC volume- 70cc
LS9 CC volume- 69.8cc (not enough difference to argue about)

Thank you. I am looking at the CNC Chevy heads and the LS3 one advertises 68cc and the LS9 one says it’s 66.5cc

I got the numbers from Summit's database. I hope they're accurate.

That’s where I got the stock LS3 cc as well.

The CNC ones you're seeing might have been clean up milled to reduce the chamber as much as it is.

It is possible. I am looking for a set of the LS3 Chevy CNC heads but was offered the LS9 version. 68 cc vs 66.5cc.

Before calculating what size combustion chambers you'll need, determine what head gaskets you wanna use. And please don't say 'stock' head gaskets.

I recommend improving your quench and going with .040" compressed gaskets. NOTE: Stock gaskets are .051" thick.

Best of luck!

Lol I was looking at stock gaskets. What gaskets would you recommend? I am looking and I can’t find a gasket with a 4.08 bore with a compressed thickness of .040. Wil going to a 4.1 inch bore really affect anything

Going from 4.08 to 4.10 is no big deal. Look at Cometic for good variety of thicknesses. They ARE pricey, but very good.

LS3 heads are 68.5cc.

Lets assume that milling .007 of an inch equates to 1cc.

.007 x 3.5cc = 0.0245

None milled heads are 1.615 inches thick and if you remove 0.0245 inch you would have 65cc chambers and with a .040 thick gasket you would be at 11.56:1

Not to high jack the thread, but do the pistons stick out of the bore on a ls3?

Yes....approximately .03" to .05".

So with a .040" gasket, you'd be looking at quench in the .035" range.
