Default Specific AIR/Smog pump system part function

Hello all. I have done my research in the threads and posts here, but I am still unclear on some specifics regarding the AIR/Smog pump system. I just installed the 150 Shot wet kit from Holley/NOS. I of course broke the crispy plastic hose that connects to the stainless hose connecting to my exhaust manifold for the AIR system. Obviously exhaust air comes out the manifold, runs through the hose and plugs into a contraption that attaches to the back of my intake. does that contraption suck the exhaust air as the manifold blows it? (sounds like a rated X film). what is that contraption on the back of the manifold. i have no SES code on the dash and the two hoses are completely seperated from each other where i broke it. my thought is to put a block on the manifold as i have read , but do i need to plug that hose going into the mystery device on the back of the intake to prevent a vaccum leak? why the heck is that thing attched to the intake in the first place? thank you in advance.

crispy 20 year old hose

That looks like the one way valve that air goes thru on its way to being injected into the exhaust manifold.

the air is coming out of the exhaust manifold. it went into that bow crispy tube and that crispy tube inserts into a device attached to the back of the intake manifold.

That's likely exhaust blowing back thru, not air

i will try to explain this again. there is a stainless steel tube bolted to the manifold. that tube has exhaust coming through it from the manifold out. there is a rubber tube that connects to that stainless (it connected until i broke it). i need to know if leaving that tube un plugged will cause a vaccum leak or othewise issue if left unplugged as that tube goes to a cylindrical unit that attaches to the back of the intake manifold. does that cylinder looking device suck exhaust fumes in, does it create a seak to avoid vaccum issues, what the heck does it do.

The system illustrated above blows air from the pump in the lower left of the diagram INTO the exhaust manifolds thru the one way valves (#30 in the diagram) which is the part in your first pic that I referred to.
NONE of this plumbs into the intake manifold. The diagram backs this up. It is the classic air injection system from the 60's only with an electric pump instead of a belt-driven one.
Here is the big question- Do you have smog inspections that require you to keep this system intact?
IF SO,make sure the inspector does not see the NOX wet kit. It will fail the inspection immediately.

ok so that doesnt go into the intake, it just mounts back there. roger that. with practically half the motor in the cabin, its tough to see what the hell is going on back there. and i dont have any smog to worry about.

i think that gave me what i needed to move forward. thank you!

If you have no inspections, remove all that stuff. Check the diagram to be sure you don't yank the wrong parts. Be sure to plug any resultant holes.

that system only works at startup to reduce emissions from the richer mixture at startup....the air injected in the exhaust dilutes the exhaust to lessen the emissions
