Default Oil filter size for remote mount

Looking at running either a Setrab or a Mocal remote mount filter setup with no thermostat. Going on road course car.

The Setrab is available in a 77 or a 92mm filter base. The Mocal will take either size. The Setrab can be had with any filter thread I want where as the Mocal I am limited to 13/16-16 which I dont "think" is a problem. Planning to run Amsoil filters. A standard LS oil filter is a 77mm.

My thought process is I want the larger diameter and as long of a filter as I can fit to get more filtration media and theoretically less pressure drop across the filter. BUT on the other hand its all going in a Miata so the smaller filter is obviously easier to fit. I will be changing oil every 2 weekends which would be about 5-6 hours of run time so running a really large filter seems like over kill.

yes ill be running a cooler.

Its a race car, I dont want a thermostat. I dont want anything that can impede flow or possibly break.

Im also using the remote mount as the feed location for an accusump...so no thermostat to block anything off.

running too cool of oil is gonna cause you more problems than "impeding flow" but okay

Guy I talk to a bunch says 77mm filter and as long as I can get. A stock LS filter is 3" x 3.4" with M22x1.5 threads... I can get a 3" x 4.45" M22x1.5 thread. Thats the longest I see on my Amsoil for an M22x1.5 thread filter.

Not opposed to different thread pitch. Setrab is available in 13/16-16, M20x1.5, M22x1.5 and 3/4-16.

I see zero in an M20x1.5 that interests me size wise. To small.
3/4-16 has a 3" x 4.75"... dont know that it buys me anything over a 3x4.45 in the M22.
13/16-16 looks like I would need to move to the 92mm remote mount. Then I am looking at filters that are either same length as I could get in the smaller diameter or way to long at like 5.4", which I think would make my packaging to large.

I dont think to cool of oil temps will be an issue on a track car...generally running in hot Texas weather.

Regardless I've got full monitoring of temps and pressures.

Thanks. I have decided against going with one of the 3 5/8" diameter filters. The 5"+ long filters start to become a packaging problem also.

I went with a Setrab 77mm 4 port base, non-thermostat.

I will run an Amsoil EAO17 filter which is a 3"x4.4" filter.

I have 3 vehicles which run the EAO17 sized filter(Mustang, F150 and Yukon) so it will be easy to keep filters around.

We have a reference chart with oil filter size and details that might be helpful here.

The 13/16-16 Wix Racing filters are very popular due to the large size and good flow. We recommend either 13/16-16 or M22x1.50 filters because there are a lot of sizes available, and those filter threads are the largest available (to minimize restriction).

If it does turn out you need a thermostat (generally not needed for race cars as you already know, but it will take longer to get up to temp without one), we offer a remote filter mount with a built in thermostat.

Here's our non-thermostatic version, which has two extra -10AN ports for plumbing an oil accumulator or a sensor: https://www.improvedracing.com/remot...t-env-140.html

Thanks. Really nice chart. Amsoil has a chart of all of their filters, but good to see another chart out there of a ton more filters.

Doing M22x1.5 and a 77mm(3" filter) remote mount from Setrab.

The Amsoil EAO17 is an AC Delco PF63/Ford FL500S equivalent filter so shouldnt be to hard to find another brand if I needed it in a pinch...

I use the Mobil 1 filter M1-212 on my car. Keeps the oil clean longer and no more ticking.
