GMPP Front Distributor Setup.. Opinions Anybody???
I'm thinking about buying the front cover and dist. drive gear as well as a MSD Pro Billet Dist., Blaster II Coil, and MSD 6AL.. Its just seems way to easy though and I'm wondering what the catch is. I have only seen one picture of this type of setup and it wasn't a good pic either so if you have any pics that can help me please post them up or some good links if you don't mind.
Is there some kind of spacer you have to buy for the water pump?? It looked like I could see one in the pic that I saw.. Also, what exactly do you have to do about a balancer with the timing marks on it??
Thanks in advance for any and all help!!

i did notice that GM themselves had this setup on their twin turbo LSX impala. it could have been to promote the dist setup, but i doubt it. but that car was supposively making 2khp. W2W made 1500hp with the stock truck coils

Valley plate you can use stock. There is a particular water pump you have to run, as the OE LSx pumps will not clear. ATI has the correct balancer. You could block off that fuel pump provision and run an electric, or run the Carter pump that is recommended by GM.

Which Ford distributor do you have to use??? Is is the 302 or 351W distributor?? I know that the lengths are different on those because of the different deck heights and I think the gears are different as well..

The gmpp front cover and gear thats in the pic above is $450 from summit.. The distributor is around $230, a blaster II coil is around $50, and a msd6al is like $225... You will also need an ATI balancer which is probably $450 or so. Then you have to change some stuff with the fuel system and the water pump is different as well. I plan to make some spacers to sit my meziere race pump out a little further.

There is a guy online that sells the waterpump spacers... You can use the stock crank with this setup, but it has to be pinned so what a hassle. if you dont have the motor out of the car its not worth it. Either way I would rather just learn how to deal with fuel injection. A buddy of mine has this setup and it hardly seems worth the gains if there are any, especially since he knows carbuerators no better then FI

you can pin a crank in the car, ATI sells the tool to do it. YOu don't think every guy with a procharger pulled the motor to pin the crank puley do ya?
1quick I totally see your thought as to why this is a good idea, I personally came from carb cars and would probably have a MUCH easier time dealing with stuff if I went to this type of setup, at least as far as tuning goes. Luckily my shop isn't too far from my house and they are always able to accomodate me when I need to have the tune looked at..... because if I was in a situation where I had to tune my own car and there was noone around, I'd go to that in a heartbeat

I think running a carb with either the MSD 6010 or the FAST XFI is a much better choice. Yes you do have to program them with a computer but it is just a much better ignition system hands down. I have a 'deteched' LS1 with a carb and MSD 6010 and it is super easy to tune.

I talked to a guy from Tennessee on the phone that was VERY helpful with this.. He answered all of my questions and also gave me the "do's and don'ts" as well.
He said that the dowel pin thing is bullshit and will end up eating up the key way in your $450 dollar balancer. Luckily I have a Callies crank and its already got a key way in it. He said he loves the setup and he uses a MSD 7531 and everything works perfectly. He is running an iron 402 with ported 6.0L heads, solid roller, 950 HP carb, powerglide with 4.30's full suspension and a 175 shot and knocking down 5.70's in 105 degree weather on 275/60's!!!!
Sounds like it works pretty damn good to me..
