I believe a transition began in '05 to the 58 tooth, but in '05 & '06 they were mixed up. Depending on who you talk to, all GTO's were 24 but the Vette's were mixed up, or both were mixed up.
if the connector is black it's 24, if its grey it's 58.

The reluctor difference is computer/PCM dependant, not engine/model year.
If you have a PCM programmed for a specific reluctor, you cannot interchange. Its best to know what where the PCM came from and used originally.

That's not completely true. It really is a factor of the engine and any PCM can be used, the harness is the electrical "key". The harness needs the right plug because the 24 and 58 tooth reluctors have different plugs, they're not interchangeable with the different harnesses.
I have a 24 tooth LS2 with an '04 GTO PCM, but the harness was made for the 24 tooth reluctor.
