Default Offset titanium valve spring retainers for LS7?

Hi,

I'm referring to this article in Hotrod Magazine:

http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/e...est/index.html

They say that they use "offset titanium valve spring retainers" when fitting the GM stage 3 LS cam to the LS7. What does "offset" retainers mean? Where can I get them and are there any GM ones that will work?

Cheers,
Thomas

I don't have experience with the ls7 style heads, but I've never heard of an offset retainer.
maybe you mean an offset rocker because of the intake valves being offset from the standard ls head?

offset refers to the different offset from the locking groove to the outer support for the spring. It lets them put back the same/stock valve spring at a slightly higher install height so that they can get more lift at the valve before coil bind.

Yes, that sounds about what they said in that article, so where can I get them? BTW, "coil bind" is that when the spring is fully compressed?

Yes, that's correct.

The old "rule of thumb" is to use a paper clip as a gauge. Roll the cam over to max lift on the valve and attempt to slide a paper clip between the coils. If it goes, you'll be ok, if it won't fit, all bets are off.

OK, that's what I thought and thanks for the tip

Still the question remains, which should I get and where do I find them?

Cheers,
