Default What size headers to get?

I'm looking to build a 454 LSX next year. Nothing fansy, just lots of power and torque for the street. I'm hoping for 600RWHP through a T56. What size headers should I use? 1 7/8"? 1 7/8" stepped to 2"? I even see that Kooks sells 2" headers now?! Would that be too big?

My engine should be on the dyno Friday. I'll let you know what it puts out at the flywheel through it's 2" Kooks and let you decide.

We're will be running ARH 2" headers to 3.5" Y-pipe on our LME LSX 454 that will be topped off with a 300 shot... We talked it over with our tuner, Nick, who then talked with the owner of ARH, also Nick, and both Nicks recommended the 2". YMMV

Does spray have any impact on the size of headers you should use? I wouldn't think so since it doesn't increase air flow but just the amount of oxygen in that air.

Also, how is fitment on those 2" headers? I still have a stock K-member but will upgrade if necessary.

Of course the N2O is just an oxidizer but it does allow the engine to breath better all around especially if you are running the rpms a bit higher... We have a UMI K-member though so not sure about clearance with the stock k-member. I know a friend had to notch his (stocker) for his 1 7/8's Kooks, so I figure that the 2" would have even less clearance... Although I have also heard great things about how the ARH fit... About the k-member also, the other consideration for us was not just clearance but also as much weight reduction on the front end as possible to offset the added weight of the LSX block itself.

We will be running the exhaust with cathedral port heads (TFS 245mm milled to 68cc's), and I am sorry but it isn't in quite yet. Still have to get a few small things for it.

I am interested though in how others decided to go with their exhaust on the larger strokers. Jeff aka AMERICAN_HP is running 2" primary headers on his LME LSX 454 in his Corvette and has had good results. I hope others will chime in and we can possibly get some theory or actual tech from the exhaust experts (which I am not). That is why I put the caveat that YMMV...

Think the UMI K-member would be stout enough to hold that iron monster while street driving spiritedly?

That is why we went specifically with the UMI unit! All of the other k-members have one cross bar underneath whereas the UMI has 2 welded together. Sam Strano has stated on here that he did research on the aftermarket k-members and the UMI is the only one he would sell. I must say it is a very solid piece, and the other manufacturers make great products, but we felt the UMI would be the strongest. Also UMI offers the upgrade to a "road race" k-member with even more bracing, although we decided on the regular/standard tubular k-member for a little extra weight savings.

n2o does not increase intake air volume but it does greatly increase exhaust volume. so yes. it does help to have a larger exhaust for an n2o car. for na cars, smaller headers would be better suited imo

TFS tested 1 7/8" and 2" Kooks on their 440 LSX, I heard there was no power difference, but if your running any N2O I would get the bigger header.

with my 416, I will stay with the 1 3/4 headers I have to keep the lower TQ. 1 7/8 may pick up 10-15 more peak HP, but with the L76 intake....who cares

I have a set of 1 7/8ths and am planning on an LSX 427. From the replies above I am guessing that I should be OK with them??

oops, add procharger to the equation, do the 1 7/8th still work?

Yup, a blower generally doesn't need as much header as N2O or even N/A, I've seen lots of guys go 9's with shortys.
