whats the difference in these motors. what did the lq4 come in???

LQ9- Escalades, Silverado SS, Maybe Denali's
Flat top & full floating pistons

LQ4- Silverado, Sierra HD's, All other 6.0L applications
Dished and Press fit pistons

so the blocks, timing covers, valley covers, etc are the same.

Yeah, there are very minimal differences in the engines. The cams may/may not be the same idk. They both share the 317 heads.

The LQ4 has a 9.4:1 compression ratio and the LQ9 has a 10:1 I believe!!!

They are based on the GEN-III architecture so everything is interchangeable

the newer engines all have floating pins and heavy rods I assume

yes the newer LQ4's have floating pistons too. I just disassembled my 2004 LQ4 and it has floating pistons not pressed. The LQ4's have somewhere around a -6cc dish to them compared to the flat top of the LQ9. Also the Head Bolt's are all short at least they were on my 04 unlike the older LS1's that had really long head bolts and 4 short bolts. The LQ9 is basically an Iron block LS2 so to speak with bigger chamber heads.

Some of the earlier ones have different Crank Flanges on the stock Crankshafts.
