Default snapped a timing chain again

as the title says i have a stroked ls2 motor and it snapped a duplex chain after about 5000 miles and we were told it helped to use a timing chain damper (v shape thing in the middle off the chain,so we rebuilt the motor all new bits comp cams chain kit (single row chain) with damper. the motor runs very well but stopped again and the new chain has snapped again !! it looks like a bad chain but could i be that unlucky or is there something else i am missing , it all run in line and the cam runs free. there is no evidense off any out off line problems it just snapped clean through a link.is a genuine gm chain the best as all our other motors are ok ? any ideas ?????? cheers craig

Has there been and PTV contact? I've seen that break off Cam dowels. Could also break the chain.

Sorry to hear of the misfortune. So you broke two differerent brands of chains? Did it happen under similar operating conditions (i.e. WOT, deceleration, just cruising)? I would also guess a bad chain, but it's really hard to say. How is the rest of the motor?

FWIW - I have run the same GM LS2 timing chain and damper on two different motors for several thousand miles without a problem. Car is shifted at 7000-7200 rpms.

Sounds like more than just bad luck to me. The GM LS2 chain is suppose to be the way to go...

I think you should change your crank dampner. Are you road racing the engine? Do you spend much time at full throttle between 3800-4400 rpm?

I've seen the LS2 chain break in a TBSS. Snapped the chain when he was on the throttle hard backed off and back on. Bent all the valves and did alot of piston damage. Thought the RPM was around 4500 when it broke. Never could find anything wrong and why it broke. It did have a underdrive pulley on it at that time. We went with a Katech timing chain. I haven't heard of anyone breaking a Katech chain. It will run you about 140 dollars and runs on the stock gears.

Something else appears to be wrong, the chain is likely the symptom but not the cause. Are the gears in alignment? How much end play on the cam?

it is a race car and both time it went into a corner on part throttle ,just a bit off slack as you would expect,it has a spi ? front underdrive on it, it does spend a lot off time between 300-5500 and rev limit set to 7000 ( all steel motor).and it is a different cam from last time all in line, it just looks like a clean break the two halves off the pin are still in the side plates . seems like two much for bad look !!!!

it had RHS heads on the first time and a 238 cam now 250cam and trick flow heads with 218 springs, there is no sign off wear at all the first one lasted 3-4000 miles the second 500 miles !! i does look like a faulty chain but would like to be sure ,

One chain may be bad luck, but a second one so soon is signs of another problem that caused it....

you need to check the end play on the crank! i think you will probably find your problem, you should not have broken two timing chains, theres something wrong that!

what i was thinking.
crank could be walking just enough to put things in a bind.
odd to bust 2 chains so soon.
